It was created in 1964 by Fraser Brunner, a British designer who was working for the Singapore Tourism Board.
The Merlion is a mythical creature that is half-lion and half-fish. The lion head symbolizes Singapore's original name, "Singapura," meaning "Lion City" in Sanskrit, referencing a legend in the Malay Annals.
The fish body alludes to its humble beginnings as a fishing village known as Temasek. The Merlion has since become synonymous with Singapore, appearing on everything from souvenirs and postcards to government logos and national merchandise. It stands as a powerful symbol of the nation's history, culture, and aspirations.
